I have a great thing going on. I have a wonderful wife I’ve been dating for over 25 years. We have two amazing kids. I have a job I am proud of, and really good friends. I have a lot of good in my life coming into Father’s Day.
This is all great. And I appreciate all of it. Most of the time.
Then there are the times when I just want to turn off all the electronics and disconnect from everything and everyone. Sometimes a run or a bike ride is enough of a quick fix. But that is the signal for me to look for a block of time on my calendar. Not just a few minutes, or an hour…we’re talking a couple hours…a morning, an afternoon. A time where I know everything urgent and everyone important is taken care of.
That’s when and why I spa. To turn off the outside world. To stop playing the mental recording of earlier meetings. To stop thinking about my never-ending to-do list. To stop planning kid coverage for next week while my wife is traveling. To stop.
I find the time I get away to the Sanctuary is restorative and reparative. There I have time to think…or not. Time to plan or not. No one needs me in those moments. No phone to answer or email to read. No Skype or Google Hangout or GoToMeeting or WebEx sessions to attend. Just time for me.
The best part isn’t just how I feel during my time at the Sanctuary. It’s how I feel when I reengage the world – turn on the iPhone, check my email, return home to my wife, kids and in-laws. I am better rested. In a better mood. Simply better.
That is why I spa.
Happy Father’s Day
